Delta Prepares for Busy Winter Holiday Travel Season

Just as the Thanksgiving season wraps up in the United States, the holiday season is upon us, and airlines are gearing up for the influx of passengers and travelers. Delta Airlines, coming off a successful Thanksgiving period, is now preparing for the winter holiday travel rush, which spans from December 21 to January 7. During this festive time, Delta is set to welcome nearly 9 million passengers, committed to providing the exceptional service the airline is renowned for.

Delta’s performance over the Thanksgiving period was impressive. From November 17 to 28, about 6.4 million customers got to experience what Delta calls the ‘Delta Difference.’ This period included five ‘brand days,’ where not a single flight operated by Delta and its Connection carriers was canceled. Remarkably, there were 30 such brand days in 2023, with ten occurring in November alone. The airline managed to keep cancellations to a mere 12 flights during the entire Thanksgiving span.

Ready for the Holiday Rush

Mike Spanos, Delta’s Chief Operating Officer, expressed confidence in the team’s readiness for the holiday season. “With a successful November and Thanksgiving operation behind us, Delta people are prepared to deliver a world-class experience for our customers over the holidays,” he said. Spanos highlighted the collective effort of Delta’s global team and partners to safely and reliably connect millions of people during the festive season.

Delta encourages customers to arrive at the airport at least three hours before their flight, especially on the busiest days, December 21-22 and December 26-30. This extra time will help ensure a smooth start to their holiday travels.

The Delta Operations and Customer Center (OCC) plays a crucial role in maintaining smooth operations for over 4,000 flights daily. Functioning 24/7 as the airline’s ‘mission control,’ the OCC stays in constant communication with crews and frontline teams. Their goal is to deliver the most seamless, safe, and on-time service possible, even amid high volumes and challenging weather conditions. The OCC team includes meteorologists who monitor weather and turbulence forecasts around the clock, adjusting flight plans and schedules as needed to maintain the highest standards of safety and efficiency.
