Delta Air Lines is enhancing its fleet by introducing 20 Airbus A350-1000 widebody aircraft. This initiative aligns with Delta’s goals of modernizing its fleet, improving fuel efficiency, and offering a better in-flight experience.
Delta currently flies 28 A350-900s and, with this announcement, will add 36 more next-gen A350 aircraft to its lineup. By the decade’s end, Delta’s A350 fleet will exceed 60. Ed Bastian, CEO of Delta, shared, “The A350-1000 will be the largest, most capable aircraft in Delta’s fleet and is an important step forward for our international expansion.” He noted the aircraft’s alignment with Delta’s fleet, its enhanced customer experience, more premium seats, and improved cargo capabilities.
The A350-1000s, powered by Rolls-Royce Trent XWB-97 engines, are over 20% more fuel-efficient than older planes. Christian Scherer of Airbus lauded Delta’s choice, remarking on the new opportunities the A350-1000 will offer.
Targeting Long-Haul Routes for Global Reach
These aircraft will mainly serve long-haul routes, aiding Delta’s international growth strategy. They will replace older aircraft and help Delta expand its global presence. The airline expects to operate its largest international schedule ever this year.
The A350-1000 will feature approximately 15% more premium seats than retiring aircraft. Travelers can expect Delta One Suites, Delta Premium Select, Delta Comfort+, and Main Cabin options. The aircraft will also offer free in-flight entertainment, Wi-Fi, and premium dining options. Its spacious cabin, high ceilings, and ambient lighting are designed to provide a comfortable travel experience.
Delta has agreed with Rolls-Royce for servicing the XWB-97 engines. This agreement’s financial terms are undisclosed. The order aligns with Delta’s capital expenditure and capacity targets. Delta’s current commitments include 284 narrowbody and 48 widebody aircraft for future delivery. The airline’s existing fleet features 28 A350-900s, used primarily for transoceanic flights.
