Finnair is embarking on a unique initiative to weigh volunteer passengers along with their hand luggage before they board their flights. This effort, which emphasizes anonymity and voluntary participation, is designed to refine the airline’s aircraft balance calculations, crucial for the safe operation of flights.
Understanding the Weighty Issue
Typically, airlines possess precise data on the weight of the aircraft, fuel, cargo, and even the food and water onboard. However, passenger weight is often an estimate based on average figures. Finnair is aiming to update its data to ensure even more accurate and efficient flight operations. The choice lies between gathering this data firsthand and getting it approved by aviation authorities or relying on the European Aviation Safety Authority (EASA)’s predefined weights. Finnair’s proactive approach to conducting its own study reflects its commitment to safety and operational excellence.
The Finnish flag carrier last conducted a similar passenger weight study back in 2018 and is now due for an update. The data collected will be instrumental for the next five years, helping Finnair to optimize flight safety and efficiency.
Privacy and Participation
Finnair is keen to reassure potential volunteers that their participation in the weighing process is entirely confidential and not linked to any personal identifiable information. “We record the total weight and background information of the customer and their carry-on baggage, but we do not ask for the name or booking number, for example. Only the customer service agent working at the measuring point can see the total weight, so you can participate in the study with peace of mind,” explained Satu Munnukka, Head of Ground Processes at Finnair.
The weighing initiative is set to take place from (February) to (May 2024) at Helsinki Airport (HEL), with the gathered data being passed to the Finnish Transport and Communications Agency between (July) and (September 2024). Upon verification, the information will be utilized for aircraft balance and loading calculations from 2025 to 2030.
Seeking Diverse Participation
Finnair hopes to attract a broad spectrum of volunteers, from business to leisure travelers, ensuring the data reflects a wide range of passenger types. This diversity is key to achieving the most accurate balance calculations possible. “In the previous measurements five years ago, a good number of volunteers wanted to participate in the weighing, and we hope to have a good sample of volunteers, both business and leisure travelers, also this time,” Munnukka added.
The scheme will focus on selected European flights within Helsinki Airport’s Schengen area and several long-haul flights departing from the non-Schengen side. Finnair’s initiative underscores the airline’s dedication to enhancing flight safety and efficiency through innovative and thoughtful approaches to standard operational procedures.
