Cebu Pacific’s Recaro SL3710 Aircraft Seats Weighs Merely 8kg

My first impression of the Airbus A330 was that it could accommodate no more than 350 passengers. However, Cebu Pacific proved me wrong by packing their A330ceo with 436 seats and their A330neo with 459 all-economy seats! This is even more seats than Philippine Airlines’ Boeing 777-300ER. One reason Cebu Pacific could fit that many seats is that they utilized the Recaro SL3710 seats, one of the world’s lightest aircraft seats.

These seats are very thin when viewed from the side. To further save weight, there are no moving parts except for the tray tables. So yes, the seats on Cebu Pacific’s new planes do not recline. The SL3710 is perfect for low-cost airlines whose goal is to maximize space.

Lightweight and Fuel-Efficient Design

The Recaro SL3710 seats utilize advanced materials and construction techniques to achieve a lightweight design. Each seat weighs only around 8 kilograms, significantly lighter than traditional economy class seats. This reduction in weight translates to lower fuel consumption, which is a critical factor for airlines aiming to reduce operational costs and carbon emissions.

The lightweight design allows for more passengers or cargo to be accommodated without increasing the aircraft’s overall weight. This efficiency contributes to a lower cost per seat mile, enhancing the airline’s profitability and sustainability efforts.

Ergonomic and Passenger-Focused Features

According to Recaro, they designed the SL3710 with passenger comfort in mind. The seats feature an ergonomic design that provides adequate support for long-haul flights. The slim backrest allows for more legroom, improving the overall passenger experience. Additionally, the seats include adjustable headrests and recline functions, enabling passengers to find a comfortable position during their journey. However in the case of Cebu Pacific, they decided not to incorporate the recline function for maximum weight savings and more space. Instead, the seats have been pre-reclined. Well, that’s according to Recaro and the airline.

The SL3710 seats incorporate smart design elements to maximize space and functionality. The seats have a modular design, allowing airlines to customize configurations based on their specific needs. The backrest pocket is designed to hold personal items securely without encroaching on passenger space. These thoughtful features enhance the usability of the seats, making them suitable for a wide range of aircraft types.

Durability and Maintenance

Even if these seats are razor-thin, durability is a key feature of the Recaro SL3710 seats. The seats are constructed using high-quality materials that withstand the rigors of frequent use. The robust construction ensures that the seats maintain their structural integrity and appearance over time, reducing the need for frequent replacements and repairs.

Recaro has designed the SL3710 seats to be easy to maintain. The modular components allow for quick and straightforward repairs, minimizing aircraft downtime. The seat covers are removable and replaceable, making it easy for airlines to keep the seats clean and well-maintained. This focus on durability and ease of maintenance translates to lower long-term costs for airlines.

So in case you get to sit in one of these SL3710 seats, particularly on Cebu Pacific’s A330neo, don’t worry, they will not break off. They are as durable as any normal seat. Comfort-wise, well honestly, I personally still prefer the old seats better. But I guess these seats are perfect for short flights like domestic flights. Not bad, if you ask me personally.
