Japan Airlines (JAL) and Boeing have announced an agreement for up to 20 additional 787 Dreamliners. This deal includes 10 firm orders for 787-9s and options for 10 more, reinforcing the 787’s role in JAL’s international routes to North America, Asia, and India. This expansion adds to Japan Airlines’ existing fleet of over 50 Boeing 787 Dreamliners.
Yukio Nakagawa, JAL’s Executive Officer of Procurement, expressed the airline’s enthusiasm about the new order. “We are delighted to announce the addition of 787 Dreamliners to our fleet. This order underscores our commitment to accelerating the introduction of the modern and more fuel-efficient aircraft to deliver unparalleled service to our customers and further reduce CO₂ emissions. We greatly appreciate the strong relationship and support from Boeing, which has been instrumental in our efforts to modernize our fleet and expand our international routes.”
Once this order is finalized and posted on Boeing’s Orders & Deliveries website, JAL will have 10 more 787s and 21 737 MAX jets on order.
Versatility and Range of the 787 Dreamliner
The versatility of the Boeing 787 has allowed Japan Airlines to open new point-to-point markets from Tokyo to destinations like San Diego, Boston, and Bangalore. The 787-9 model, with a range of up to 7,565 nautical miles (14,010 km), offers the longest range capability within the 787 family. This enables JAL to add new routes and increase flexibility within its existing network.
Brad McMullen, Boeing’s Senior Vice President of Commercial Sales and Marketing, highlighted the importance of this partnership. “Japan Airlines continues to be a global ambassador for the 787 Dreamliner, and this latest agreement is a testament to the versatility and efficiency of the 787-9 for the airline’s key long-haul routes. We value our long-standing partnership with Japan Airlines and are pleased that they have re-selected the 787 Dreamliner as they continue to modernize their world-class fleet.”
Since the 787 family entered revenue service in 2011, it has opened more than 400 new nonstop routes around the world. The 787 has received more than 1,900 orders from 87 customers, with more than half of these orders coming from repeat customers like Japan Airlines. JAL operates both the 787-8 and 787-9 models, benefiting from their fuel efficiency and range capabilities.
