KLM Welcomes Very First Airbus A321neo

KLM Royal Dutch Airlines celebrated the arrival of its first Airbus A321neo at Amsterdam Airport Schiphol, signaling a key milestone in the airline’s fleet renewal program. This new aircraft represents a significant shift towards cleaner, quieter, and more efficient operations. Starting in mid-September, the A321neo will begin serving several European destinations.

Marjan Rintel, President & CEO of KLM, expressed enthusiasm for the new addition, stating, “The arrival of the first A321neo marks the start of replacing our Boeing 737 fleet. The A321neo produces less noise and CO2 and therefore contributes significantly to a cleaner, quieter future. It also offers more comfort. I am looking forward to see how our passengers will experience the new aircraft.”

The A321neo is approximately 21% more fuel-efficient per passenger tonne kilometer than the Boeing 737s it replaces. Additionally, the aircraft’s noise footprint is nearly halved, resulting in less disturbance for residents near airports.

KLM’s investment in fleet renewal is substantial, with seven billion euros allocated for the program over the next few years. On European routes, the airline will replace older Boeing 737s with Airbus A320 and A321neo aircraft. Meanwhile, KLM Cityhopper will introduce new E2 models alongside the existing Embraer 175 and 190 aircraft. For intercontinental flights, five new Boeing 787-10s will join the fleet, and the older 777s and A330s will be replaced by Airbus A350s. Additionally, KLM has ordered four A350Fs for its cargo division to replace the aging 747 freighters.

Upgraded Comfort and Convenience for Passengers

Passengers aboard the A321neo will enjoy an upgraded experience, thanks to wider seats, larger tables, and more spacious luggage bins. Each seat includes a USB-C port and a holder for mobile devices or tablets. The aircraft’s interior has been thoughtfully designed to enhance the KLM experience, featuring mood lighting that adapts to different stages of the flight and other recognizable KLM details.

The crew will also benefit from improvements, such as a wider aisle and user-friendly luggage bins, making their tasks more efficient and convenient.

A Unique Theme: Butterfly Names

In keeping with KLM’s tradition of giving its aircraft unique names, the new A321neo series will be named after butterflies. This theme, chosen by KLM employees, reflects the airline’s transformation with its new fleet. The first four aircraft will be named Swallowtail (Koninginnepage), Peach Blossom (Braamvlinder), Common Brimstone (Citroenvlinder), and Clouded Magpie (Porseleinvlinder).
