Philippine Air Force Seeks to Acquire 40 Multi-Role Fighter Jets

The Philippine Air Force has initiated the process of acquiring 40 new multi-role fighter jets as part of its efforts to strengthen territorial defense, based on a report from Reuters. Defense Secretary Gilberto Teodoro announced this plan during a congressional budget hearing on August 22, 2024. As the country looks to bolster its military capabilities, potential bidders have been invited to submit financing packages that would allow for staggered payments, though no specific models or manufacturers have been named yet. The timeframe for this procurement remains unclear.

The Philippine Air Force currently operates a limited number of fighter jets, primarily South Korean FA-50s. To enhance its defense capabilities, the military has emphasized the need for “faster and more lethal” multi-role fighters. The government’s modernization efforts are part of a broader strategy to update and expand the country’s military inventory.

President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. has approved the “Re-Horizon 3” acquisition plan, a comprehensive defense procurement strategy valued at 1.89 trillion pesos (approximately $33.64 billion). This plan aims to equip the Philippine Air Force with advanced military weaponry and equipment to address current and future security challenges.

Potential Contenders for the Philippine Air Force

Two fighter jets are at the forefront of considerations for the Philippine Air Force: the US-made Lockheed Martin F-16V Viper and the Swedish-made Saab JAS39 Gripen.

  • Lockheed Martin F-16V Viper: The F-16V is an advanced version of the widely-used F-16 fighter jet. It features cutting-edge avionics, a superior radar system, and enhanced combat capabilities. For the Philippine Air Force, the F-16V would provide a significant boost in aerial defense, offering versatility in various combat scenarios and strengthening the country’s air dominance.
  • Saab JAS39 Gripen: The Gripen is a multi-role fighter known for its agility, advanced electronic warfare systems, and cost-effective operation. The Philippine Air Force would benefit from the Gripen’s ability to perform in diverse environments, along with its lower operational costs, making it a practical option for sustained defense missions.

The Philippine government is exploring various financing options to fund this extensive modernization program, including the possibility of securing syndicated loans from private lenders. The defense ministry is focused on finding reasonable and sustainable funding solutions to support the acquisition of these new fighter jets.
