Etihad adds five new China routes from Abu Dhabi hub

Etihad Airways is expanding in China with plans to launch flights to five more cities over the next year, giving the airline a much bigger presence in one of its most important markets. The Abu Dhabi-based carrier will start daily service to Shanghai Pudong at the beginning of October, then add Guangzhou, Hangzhou, Shandong, and Chengdu in March next year.

The new flights will sharply increase Etihad’s footprint in mainland China. Right now, the airline serves Beijing Daxing daily from Abu Dhabi. Once the new routes are in place, Etihad will operate 35 mainland China frequencies from its home hub. The airline will use Boeing 787 aircraft on the added services.

“China is a strategically important market for Etihad and a key pillar of our network growth,” says Etihad Airways chief executive Antonoaldo Neves. “By adding five new destinations and increasing frequencies, we are strengthening connectivity across one of the world’s most important economic corridors.”

Shanghai starts first, more cities follow in March

Shanghai will be the first of the new routes to begin, with daily flights starting in early October. After that, Etihad will add Guangzhou with daily service, while Hangzhou, Shandong, and Chengdu will each get 14 weekly flights from March next year.

That schedule shows Etihad is not only adding destinations, but also putting serious capacity into the market. The plan goes beyond a simple network update. It gives the airline a broader spread across major Chinese cities and more options for passengers traveling between China, Abu Dhabi, and the rest of Etihad’s network.

The added routes will also operate as part of Etihad’s joint venture with China Eastern Airlines. That partnership began operating last April, when China Eastern launched flights from Shanghai to Abu Dhabi. The joint venture gives Etihad a stronger base for growth in China, especially as it adds more direct links into the country.

China expansion also supports cargo growth

The China push is also tied to Etihad’s wider fleet and cargo plans. Last year, the airline placed 60 new widebody commitments with Airbus and Boeing. Some of those delivery slots are set for 2027, giving Etihad more room to grow its long-haul network in the near term.

The airline also said the new China routes will strengthen its cargo business. That side of the operation has already been supported by a cargo joint venture with Chinese freight carrier SF Airlines. More flights to mainland China mean more belly cargo capacity on passenger aircraft, which is important for trade flows between China, the Gulf, and other markets connected through Abu Dhabi.
