Power Outage at NAIA Terminal 3: Canceled Flights and Chaos

Over 40 flights were canceled at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) Terminal 3, with more expected to be delayed on the long Labor Day weekend due to hours of power outage at the terminal. Travelers experienced chaos as the inconvenience and intense heat in the terminal led to restlessness. Some passengers received alerts from the airlines when they were already at the airport.

President Ferdinand Marcos Jr., who is in the United States for an official visit, tasked Transportation Secretary Jaime Bautista to immediately fix the problem and attend to affected passengers. Bautista informed that Terminal 3 is currently using a power generator to cover essential functions, including check-in operations and departures. However, elevators, escalators, and the central air-conditioning system were non-operational during the power outage.

Flight Cancellations and Recovery Measures

The Manila International Airport Authority reported that the power outage started at 1:05 a.m. and lasted until 9:30 a.m. It is now investigating the cause of the power failure. The power outage resulted in a series of canceled flights, which are costly for airlines as they have to rebook passengers, provide affected passengers with meals, and even mount recovery flights.

Cebu Pacific had to cancel 40 flights due to the power outage. AirAsia Philippines also announced that some of its flights would depart at a later time.
