Emirates Unshaken by New Saudi Airlines

Emirates President Tim Clark recently dismissed concerns that the surge in new Saudi airlines and the expansion of regional competitors would impact the Dubai-based carrier. He confidently stated that the resilient demand for leisure travel would continue to support Emirates’ business. With airlines like Air India, Saudia, Riyadh Air, and NEOM Airlines growing their fleet and offerings, the competition in the region is heating up. However, Clark remains unfazed, emphasizing, “Does that affect us? No, I don’t believe so.”

The Impact of Saudi Airlines on the Aviation Landscape

The rise of Saudi airlines such as Riyadh Air, NEOM Airlines, and Saudia presents a new challenge for Emirates as they strive to secure a larger portion of the market share. These airlines have signaled their interest in expanding their long-haul routes, which could potentially encroach on Emirates’ stronghold. Yet, Clark reassures the public that no such threat exists, adding, “In the case of Saudi airlines, which are now going to be three – Riyadh, NEOM, and Saudia, this is going to be very interesting to watch.”

Emirates’ Future Fleet Plans and Supply Chain Challenges

Emirates has ambitious plans for its future fleet, with 165 jets on order, including Airbus A350s, Boeing 777-9s, and 787s. Although the delivery of these aircraft has faced numerous delays, Clark remains optimistic that the A350s will be flying for Emirates by August 2024. The company is also refurbishing its existing 777s to maintain a competitive edge in the market.

Despite ongoing supply chain issues, Clark expects the aircraft supply chain to return to “some degree of normality” around mid-2024. He emphasized that Emirates would never be held at the mercy of the supply chain or manufacturer, stating, “So if the 777 is late again, we still have something in the armoury to cover all eventualities.”

A Bright Future for Leisure Travel

Clark predicts a significant increase in leisure travel over the next five to ten years, indicating a resilient demand for air travel. As Emirates continues to focus on maintaining its dominant position and addressing supply chain issues, the airline is well-prepared to face the evolving landscape of the aviation industry. Clark’s unwavering confidence in Emirates’ ability to thrive amidst increased competition is a testament to the company’s commitment to providing exceptional service to its customers.
