PAL to Sell Off Four DHC 8-300, Aims for New-Gen Aircraft

If you’re a regular visitor to Airfleets.net, you’ve probably noticed something unusual about the PAL Express fleet list. Why are the DeHavilland Canada DHC 8-300s still listed when they’re no longer in service? The answer to this enigma is simple: these planes are technically still part of the fleet, but they’re not operational. Philippine Airlines (PAL), the parent company of PAL Express, is actively in discussions with potential buyers to sell four of its dormant DHC 8-300 turboprops.

Turning Dead Assets into Profit

PAL President and Chief Operating Officer, Stanley K. Ng, mentioned in a report by Business World that the company views these inactive aircraft as dead assets. He stated, “It has been there for a while. Those are the old-generation Bombardiers. We are still negotiating with some of the buyers, but I don’t think there’s a definite timeline as of the moment.”

Although the airline acknowledges that the sale of these planes won’t raise significant funds, PAL aims to reactivate 75 aircraft within the year, fostering a positive outlook for its balance books.

PAL Express’ Diverse Fleet

According to ch-Aviation, PAL Express has four inactive DHC-8-Q300s for sale, in addition to 12 DHC-8-Q400s, of which eight are now in active service. The regional arm of Philippine Airlines also operates a mix of 18 Airbus A320-200 and A321-200 aircraft. These planes serve various destinations across the Philippines’ 7,000-island archipelago.

The four DHC-8-Q300 aircraft that PAL Express is looking to sell include:

  • RP-C3020, previously operated for ANA Wings, joined PAL Express in December 2012, inactive since June 2018
  • RP-C3016, new to PAL Express in December 2007, however inactive since June 2018
  • RP-C3017, new to PAL Express in March 2008, however inactive since June 2018
  • RP-C3018, new to PAL Express in April 2008, however inactive since June 2018

As the airline industry continues to evolve, PAL Express’s decision to sell its old-generation aircraft highlights the company’s dedication to modernization and efficiency. With the proceeds from these sales, the airline will be able to invest in new-generation aircraft and further digitize its operations, ensuring a more seamless travel experience for its customers.
