An unexpected event unfolded at Russia’s St Petersburg Airport when an Emirates Airlines Boeing 777 caught fire. The Boeing 777-300ER was preparing to commence return flight EK176 to Dubai when its Auxiliary Power Unit (APU), the device that provides energy for non-propulsion functions, ignited. The aircraft, registered as A6-EBR and having 17 years in service, was consequently delayed for five hours.
Smoke Signals a Problem
The issue came to light as smoke was detected during the pushback phase in preparation for departure. The airline explained, “The flight was brought back to the stand as smoke was reported during the pushback for departure.” This unexpected occurrence prompted immediate action from the airline as a safety measure. They swiftly facilitated the safe disembarkation of all passengers and crew members on board.
Safety Inspections and Rescheduled Departure
