AirAsia’s CEO, Bo Lingam, recently revisited the idea of launching a standalone AirAsia Vietnam operation. Speaking to Bloomberg this week, he mentioned that while the company is interested in establishing a presence in Vietnam, it has no plans to set up airlines outside Southeast Asia.
AirAsia Aviation Group, a subsidiary of Capital A, manages several operations across Southeast Asia, including AirAsia Cambodia, Thai AirAsia, Philippines AirAsia, Indonesia AirAsia, and AirAsia X brands. Capital A’s other aviation subsidiary, AirAsia Bhd, owns and operates AirAsia. These two entities, AirAsia Aviation Group and AirAsia Bhd, will soon merge into a single investment holding company called AirAsia Group Sdn Bhd, with Lingam set to lead the new entity.
Vietnam Airlines and VietJetAir currently dominate the Vietnamese market, holding 38.01% and 37.53% of the market share, respectively, based on weekly seat availability. Malaysia’s AirAsia ranks as the seventh largest operator in Vietnam with a 1% market share, while Thai AirAsia comes in tenth with a 0.87% market share. Lingam did not provide a timeline or detailed plans for establishing an AirAsia-branded carrier in Vietnam.
AirAsia CEO Bo Lingam’s recent comments signal the company’s renewed interest in launching a standalone operation in Vietnam. With a strong presence in Southeast Asia, AirAsia aims to expand its footprint within the region while focusing on key markets like Vietnam, where it faces significant competition from local carriers.
First love never dies. I fell in love with airplanes and aviation when I was a kid. My dream was to become a pilot, but destiny led me to another path: to be an aviation digital media content creator and a small business owner. My passion for aviation inspires me to bring you quality content through my website and social accounts. Aviation is indeed in my blood and blog!
