AirAsia Philippines Takes Steps to Manage Fuel Surcharge Costs

AirAsia Philippines is implementing measures to minimize the impact of fuel surcharges on flight costs, ensuring that travel remains affordable during the final month of summer. For the past three months, the Fuel Surcharge has remained at Level 6, adding between PHP185 and PHP665 for domestic flights and PHP610.37 to PHP949.51 for international flights. These surcharges apply to tickets purchased between May 1 and May 30. However, AirAsia Philippines clarifies that tickets bought in January and February are not subject to Fuel Surcharge adjustments.

Despite the high Fuel Surcharge, AirAsia Philippines has shown strong performance. In the first quarter, the airline sold 91% of its available seats, totaling 1.87 million, surpassing its initial target. The load factor also increased by 104%.

Steve Dailisan, AirAsia Philippines Head of Communications and Public Affairs, mentioned that travelers can still find affordable fares with AirAsia, pointing out the airline’s 20% off promo for all seats and flights, which was available until April 28. He advised travelers to plan their trips ahead to save on costs.

Optimizing Airport Operations

AirAsia Philippines is also looking to improve airport operations and the customer experience by optimizing flight transfers between terminals. The airline is in discussions with Manila International Airport Authority (MIAA) to move its international flights from Terminal 3 to Terminal 1. This change aims to reduce taxiway use and carbon emissions, benefiting overall airport operations. The shorter distance between Terminals 1 and 2, where AirAsia operates domestic flights, should also lead to improved customer journeys with shorter transfer times.

Dailisan added, “This move will be the ‘Best Move’ for all stakeholders.” Last year, AirAsia successfully transferred its domestic operations from Terminal 4 to Terminal 2.

AirAsia Philippines praised MIAA’s support for the initiative, with General Manager Eric Jose Ines leading efforts to ensure the welfare of passengers remains a priority. The airline aims to double its international passengers in 2024, following last year’s record of over 1.72 million guests traveling to various international destinations. It also plans to increase frequencies on existing international routes to make air travel more accessible to everyone.
