American Airlines Boeing 737 Aborts Takeoff After Blowing Tires

On July 10, 2024, an American Airlines Boeing 737-800 faced a severe issue at Tampa International Airport, leading to an aborted takeoff. Flight 590, heading from Tampa to Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport, experienced multiple tire blowouts during its acceleration on the runway. A video circulating on social media captures the aircraft gaining speed before debris from the blown tires is visibly ejected, followed by a streak of smoke.

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) confirmed that the crew reported the tire blowouts, prompting the immediate halt of the takeoff. All 176 passengers and six crew members were safely evacuated from the aircraft on the taxiway and transported to the terminal via bus. American Airlines provided an alternative flight for the passengers and expressed regret for the disruption.

No injuries were reported in this incident, and the FAA has launched an investigation to determine the cause of the tire blowouts. American Airlines stated, “We never want to disrupt our customers’ travel plans and apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused.”

This event follows a similar incident involving a United Airlines Boeing 757-200, which lost a wheel during takeoff from Los Angeles International Airport the previous day. Additionally, in March, a United Airlines Boeing 777-200 bound for Japan lost a tire after departing San Francisco International Airport, causing damage in an employee parking lot.

The recent occurrences of tire-related issues appear to be isolated events, though they have drawn attention to airline safety protocols. Despite the increased scrutiny on United Airlines following a series of safety-related incidents, none have resulted in injuries. The FAA continues to monitor and investigate these incidents to ensure the highest safety standards are maintained.

Airlines like American and United are under constant observation to maintain and enhance safety measures. The aviation industry prioritizes passenger safety, and any mechanical issues, such as tire blowouts, are thoroughly investigated to prevent recurrence.
