In an effort to elevate Air Traffic Management (ATM) and Aeronautical Information Services/Management (AIS/AIM) in the Philippines, a partnership has been forged between the Civil Aviation Authority of the Philippines (CAAP) and the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO). They have embarked on a technical mission slated from July 17 to 21, 2023, with the primary aim of evaluating and improving the regulatory framework, service delivery organization, operational environment, and processes related to ATM and AIS in the country.
Speaking on the occasion, CAAP’s Director General, Captain Manuel Antonio Tamayo, acknowledged the invaluable guidance and assistance provided by ICAO. He stressed the importance of the mission, stating, “CAAP has been consistently benefiting from ICAO’s assistance, which has helped us to significantly improve our regulatory framework and operational processes. To my CAAP colleagues, bear in mind that our main goal is to perform an exhaustive analysis of our ATM/AIS, pinpoint priority areas, and maintain an ongoing process of service improvement and enhancement.”
Participation and Observation in Action
Throughout the week-long event, CAAP’s Air Traffic Service (ATS) and Aerodrome and Air Navigation Service Safety Oversight Office (AANSOO) personnel will actively engage in the process. The ICAO representatives will closely watch the ATC operations and systems at Manila Area Control, Approach Control, and Aerodrome Control facilities.
The partnership marks a significant step forward for the Philippines’ aviation industry. It presents a golden opportunity to work hand in hand with global experts, gain valuable insights, and implement international best practices in a local context.
The involvement of ICAO in this process reflects the global nature of aviation and the importance of standardization in maintaining safety and efficiency in the skies. This initiative will go a long way towards boosting the Philippines’ capabilities in air traffic management and enhancing the safety and efficiency of air travel in the country.
This endeavor serves as an ideal opportunity to strengthen international cooperation in the aviation sector. It reaffirms the commitment of CAAP and ICAO to strive for the continuous improvement and enhancement of air traffic management services, ultimately ensuring safer skies for everyone.
