The passengers and crew of a Delta Boeing 717 can now breathe easy after their plane made a successful landing at Charlotte Douglas International Airport, despite a challenging technical issue. In a rare occurrence on June 28, the aircraft landed with its nose gear in an upright position. While the event might have been nerve-wracking, Delta Air Lines, safety measures, and emergency responses were on full display.
An Unexpected Landing
Delta Air Lines Flight 1092 touched down on Charlotte’s Runway 36 Left at approximately 8:40 a.m., despite the nose gear malfunction. The aircraft was able to safely stop on the runway, much to everyone’s relief. Due to the unresolved mechanical issues, the plane remains on the runway, with the airport working diligently to remove it.
The runway’s closure has led to operational impacts, as reported by CLT Airport officials. Despite these logistical challenges, the most important factor is that no injuries were reported among the two pilots, three flight attendants, and 96 passengers onboard. All were safely transported to the terminal via bus.
Delta’s Emphasis on Safety and Customer Care
In an official statement, Delta emphasized, “Nothing is more important than the safety of our customers and people.” Even though this is a seldom seen situation, Delta flight crews undergo rigorous training to manage a wide array of scenarios. Passengers and crew members had to deplane using a slide. Meanwhile, efforts are ongoing to safely remove the plane from the runway. With the runway closure, FlightAware reports that 138 departing and 98 incoming flights have experienced delays at Charlotte.

The Delta aircraft at the center of the incident, a Boeing 717-200, bears the registration N955AT. This 22-year-old jet took its first flight in September 2000.
