Emirates is rolling out new amenity kits for its Premium Economy and Economy Class passengers on long-haul flights. These aren’t just any kits; they’re designed to raise awareness about endangered species. Created in collaboration with United for Wildlife, the kits feature eight of the planet’s most at-risk animals.
A Partnership for Preservation
United for Wildlife and Emirates have been partners for a while, working together to preserve wildlife and their habitats. This is a key part of Emirates Environmental Sustainability Framework. The new kits are another way Emirates is showing its commitment to this cause. David Fein, Co-Chair of United for Wildlife, praised Emirates for its leadership role in tackling the global threat of wildlife trafficking. He said, “Emirates have consistently demonstrated leadership and commitment in tackling this global threat. We are delighted to see the new amenity kits from Emirates now onboard and hope that passengers find them informative and inspiring.”
The Crisis in Numbers
The statistics United for Wildlife shared are eye-opening. Every day, 100 elephants are poached. If this continues, elephants could be extinct in the wild by 2025. Rhinos are also in danger, with only 30,000 remaining compared to 500,000 at the start of the 20th century. Pangolins have the unfortunate title of being the most trafficked mammal in the world. The kits feature these animals, along with the green sea turtle, blue macaw, gorilla, hammerhead shark, and lion, to shed light on the crisis.
What’s Inside the Kit?
The amenity kits are as eco-friendly as their message. The pouches are reusable and made from washable kraft paper. The art of the featured animals is printed in non-toxic soy-based ink. Inside, you’ll find travel essentials made from materials that cut down on the use of new plastic. The toothbrush combines wheat straw and plastic, while the socks and eyeshades are made from recycled plastic. Emirates plans to add earplugs back into the kits by the end of the year, responding to customer demand.
Emirates is a member of the United for Wildlife Transport Taskforce and has a strict policy against the illegal trade of wildlife and their products. Emirates SkyCargo, the airline’s freight arm, has banned the transport of hunting trophies from elephants, rhinos, lions, and tigers. In June 2023, the airline earned IATA Environmental Assessment Stage One and the IEnvA Illegal Wildlife Trade module certifications, reinforcing its commitment to responsible practices.
Emirates is taking action to protect endangered species by introducing new amenity kits on its long-haul flights. These kits, made in partnership with United for Wildlife, aim to educate passengers about the urgent need for wildlife preservation. The kits are not only informative but also eco-friendly, aligning with Emirates’ broader sustainability goals.
