Southwest Airlines is embarking on an exciting journey to modernize its brand and enhance the customer experience. With a series of upgrades that include a redesigned cabin, new seats, and refreshed uniforms for over 53,000 employees, Southwest is setting a new standard in air travel.
In collaboration with Tangerine, a renowned design firm specializing in transportation, Southwest is rolling out an updated cabin interior for new aircraft deliveries starting next year. This redesign, driven by extensive customer and employee feedback, will showcase Southwest’s vibrant energy through deep blue tones, sky blue accents, and a pattern that pays homage to the Southwest Heart across the cabin’s carpet.
The selection of new aircraft seats from RECARO, a global leader in premium aircraft seating, marks a significant upgrade in passenger comfort. The decision was based on thorough customer research and product testing, resulting in seats that not only match the cabin’s calm blue palette but also feature the Southwest Heart debossed on seat headrests. RECARO’s seats are designed to offer superior head and neck support, with a multi-adjustable headrest cushion and an intuitive design that maximizes seat width and overall support. Each seat will also come equipped with a personal electronic device holder, allowing passengers to easily enjoy free Inflight Entertainment on their devices.
Tony Roach, Senior Vice President and Chief Customer Officer at Southwest Airlines, emphasizes that the redesigned cabin interior will significantly enhance the inflight customer experience, complementing the exceptional service provided by Southwest’s crews.
A Uniform Inspiration Team of 75 Southwest employees is collaborating with the apparel vendor Design Collective by Cintas and fashion stylist Bonnie Markel to create modern uniforms for employees. This project represents a dynamic co-creation process, bringing together diverse perspectives to craft apparel that embodies the Southwest brand while meeting the functional and fashion needs of employees.
Enhancing Customer Experience with New Features
Southwest continues to innovate, making air travel easier and more enjoyable for its customers. The airline has completed fleetwide upgrades to its WiFi equipment, enhancing the inflight internet browsing experience with increased bandwidth and faster data speeds. Additionally, new 737 MAX 8 aircraft delivered to Southwest are equipped with onboard USB A and USB C power ports and larger overhead bins, features that will also be added to existing MAX 8 and 737-800 aircraft over the coming years.
Southwest’s digital platforms and airport kiosks have seen new functionalities, such as Free Same-Day Standby, Digital Bag Tracking, and Online Baggage Check-In. The airline is also making it easier for customers to earn tier status in its Rapid Rewards program, with A-List Preferred Members enjoying up to two complimentary premium drinks per flight. Soon, customers will have the flexibility to pay for Southwest flights using a combination of cash and Rapid Rewards points, and the airline plans to introduce a new onboard salty snack and refresh its snack offerings on flights between the U.S. mainland and Hawaii.
Southwest Airlines is reinventing the flying experience with its comprehensive modernization plan. From redesigned cabins and new seating to uniform refreshes and enhanced customer services, Southwest is committed to providing a comfortable, stylish, and convenient travel experience for all its passengers.
