Federal Express Corporation (FedEx), one of the largest express transportation companies globally, has signed an agreement with Luzon International Premiere Airport Development (LIPAD) to expand and upgrade its gateway at Clark International Airport in Pampanga. This expansion aims to enhance capabilities that will benefit local businesses, especially in the growing fields of e-commerce, freight, and cold-chain shipments across the Asia Pacific region.
The new FedEx facility at Clark will more than double its current size, providing greater support for both importers and exporters. This includes small-and-medium enterprises (SMEs) and heavy-weight freight shippers, offering them more reliable access to international markets. This strategic move aligns with the vision of BCDA, CDC, and LIPAD to transform Clark International Airport into a premier global logistics hub.
Strategic Partnership and Economic Benefits
The signing ceremony, held at the FedEx Gateway, was attended by key figures such as Joshua Bingcang, President and CEO of Bases Conversion and Development Authority (BCDA); Arrey Perez, President of Clark International Airport Corporation (CIAC); and Noelle Meneses, Vice President for Business Development and Business Enhancement of Clark Development Corporation (CDC).
Maribeth Espinosa, Managing Director of FedEx Philippines, expressed enthusiasm about the expansion, stating, “We are pleased to sign this agreement that symbolizes our intent to kick-start the expansion of our gateway at Clark.” She emphasized FedEx’s commitment to enhancing its network and service offerings to support the growing needs of customers and strengthen their connection to overseas markets.
Noel Manankil, President and CEO of LIPAD, added, “This landmark agreement embodies our unwavering commitment to fostering sustainable development and economic vitality in the region, ensuring a brighter future for us and the whole community.”
Infrastructure and Technological Enhancements
The expansion includes the establishment of additional facilities such as aprons and taxiways, which will facilitate better handling of cargo and foster growth in the logistics sector. These developments are expected to bring economic benefits to the northern Luzon region, providing job opportunities for the local community and serving as an economic stimulus.
The current 17,000-square-meter FedEx facility, unveiled in October 2021, is equipped with state-of-the-art technology capable of sorting up to 9,000 parcels per hour. The facility’s dedicated freight-handling area spans 630 square meters, enabling FedEx to provide more efficient and reliable service to its customers.
As FedEx celebrates its 40th anniversary in the Philippines, the company continues to offer innovative products and services. In October 2023, FedEx launched a new flight service between Vietnam and the Philippines, improving transit times and supporting trade growth between the two markets. This continuous introduction of enhanced solutions will enable Philippine businesses to capture more import and export opportunities.
