Icelandair Embraces Airbus A321XLR for Fleet Renewal

In a historic move, Icelandair has signed a memorandum of understanding to purchase 13 Airbus A321XLR aircraft, marking the airline’s first-ever Airbus order. This decision is part of Icelandair’s strategy to replace its aging fleet of Boeing 757s. While the financial terms of the deal remain undisclosed, it includes options for an additional 12 long-haul narrowbody aircraft.

Deliveries of the A321XLRs are expected to commence in 2029. However, Icelandair has plans to start operating Airbus aircraft from 2025, intending to lease four A321LRs first. “With the acquisition of the Airbus aircraft, Icelandair will complete the replacement of the Boeing 757,” the carrier states in a 7 April statement.

Expanding Horizons with the A321XLR

The airline currently has a fleet of 17 757s, including two -300s, which have been part of the fleet for over 30 years. The new A321XLRs will likely accommodate around 190 passengers, seven more than the 757s and up to 30 more than the 737 Max fleet. This upgrade presents a significant opportunity for Icelandair to enter new and exciting markets, fostering future growth.

Icelandair CEO Bogi Nils Bogason expressed that the new aircraft would “open opportunities for future growth by entering new and exciting markets.” Before finalizing the order, Icelandair held fleet renewal discussions with both Airbus and Boeing, considering A320neo family jets and the 737 Max aircraft.

This order marks a notable shift in Icelandair’s fleet composition, which has always been dominated by Boeing aircraft. However, Icelandair confirmed its continued commitment to its Boeing fleet, including the 767s, on 7 April. “The Boeing 757, 767, and 737 Max aircraft will continue to be important for Icelandair’s operations in the coming years. Icelandair has had a successful relationship with Boeing for decades, and the aircraft have been a key to Icelandair’s success in the past,” the airline states.

As Icelandair prepares to welcome Airbus aircraft into its fleet, the transition promises to enhance its market presence and open up new opportunities for growth. This significant shift in the airline’s fleet strategy demonstrates its adaptability and forward-thinking approach to meeting the ever-evolving demands of the aviation industry.
