IndiGo Eyes Expansion with Boeing 787 Widebody Jets

IndiGo seems to have more plans up its sleeve even after a record order of 500 Airbus planes. Now, IndiGo is reportedly in talks with Boeing for 787 widebody jets. Industry insiders told Reuters on Monday that Boeing has become the front-runner to secure an order for around 25 wide-body planes from IndiGo. This move aligns with IndiGo’s strategy to deepen its international expansion with new destinations.

The airline is considering Boeing’s 787 family of twin-aisle aircraft, which is competing against Airbus A330neo jets. However, sources familiar with the matter have stated that no decision has been finalized, and both IndiGo and Boeing have declined to comment on the ongoing negotiations.

Aiming for the Sky

The recent talks with Boeing come just weeks after IndiGo placed a record order for 500 Airbus narrow-body jets. This order overshadowed a previous record deal by rival Air India for 470 Airbus and Boeing planes. Indian carriers are racing to keep up with the world’s fastest-growing aviation market, where demand for air travel has soared post-COVID. This surge in demand is breaking industry records, even as plane manufacturers are struggling to meet production goals.

IndiGo, holding a 58% share of India’s domestic market, is also planning to double its capacity by the end of the decade. The airline’s drive to expand its network, especially in international markets, is evident in its recent actions.

International Expansion and Partnerships

IndiGo has recently launched new flights to destinations in Africa, West Asia, and Southeast Asia. The airline is also growing its presence in Europe through its codeshare partnership with seven carriers, including Turkish Airlines and KLM.

Interestingly, IndiGo has been an exclusive buyer of Airbus narrow-body jets, and a deal for wide-body planes with Boeing would mark a departure from that strategy. Earlier this year, IndiGo began international operations with a Boeing 777, its first twin-aisle aircraft, taken from partner Turkish Airlines, which provides the pilots.

IndiGo’s potential deal with Boeing for 787 widebody jets highlights the airline’s ambitious growth plans. As the airline continues to expand its international reach and grow its fleet, it’s clear that IndiGo is committed to maintaining its leading position in India’s aviation market.
