Lufthansa A320 retrofit adds bigger bins and USB ports

The Lufthansa A320 retrofit is now showing up on more short- and medium-haul flights, and the changes are easy to spot once you step onboard. Lufthansa is updating 38 A320 aircraft with new seats, larger overhead bins, and small details that make the cabin feel more current, especially for passengers who travel with carry-on bags and devices.

Jens Ritter, CEO Lufthansa Airlines, said, “Our ambition is clear: We want to offer our guests a premium experience on short- and medium-haul routes as well. The A320 family is our largest fleet – that’s why we’re investing in the modernization of more than 30 aircraft. We’re presenting our guests with a modern, high-quality cabin whose design is inspired by our new long-haul deliveries. Our guests can look forward to more comfort and significantly more space for their carry-on baggage.”

Lufthansa says retrofit work has been running since spring last year. The first fully updated aircraft, registered as “D-AIZY”, returned to service in mid-February. Lufthansa plans to complete the full set of 38 aircraft by 2029. The airline says each aircraft takes about 30 days to update, and the work involves installing around 1,000 components sourced from about 100 suppliers.

What’s changing inside the cabin

The most noticeable upgrade is the seating. Lufthansa selected new seats from Geven, and the airline says they are designed to feel more comfortable than the previous ones. Passengers will also see headrests that adjust horizontally. Lufthansa says Business Class gets an added comfort feature as well, with a backrest that reclines farther.

Overhead bin space is also getting a clear boost. Lufthansa says the new bins are 40 percent larger, with more room for carry-on bags because luggage can now be stored vertically. Lufthansa expects this to help boarding move faster since passengers can stow bags more quickly. The cleaner look of the bins also helps the cabin feel newer.

Charging and device use are part of the update, too. Lufthansa says every seat will have both USB-A and USB-C ports, so passengers can charge phones and other devices. Seats also get a holder for a tablet or smartphone, making it easier to watch videos on a personal screen without holding the device the whole flight.
