Lufthansa City Airlines started flight operations from Frankfurt Airport on February 9. The airline first launched in Munich in summer 2024, and it now adds Frankfurt as another base inside the Lufthansa Group.
Peter Albers, Chief Operating Officer of Lufthansa City Airlines, said, “With our new base and the targeted expansion of our short-haul network, we are simultaneously strengthening our market position and laying the foundation for further growth within the Group,”
Lufthansa City Airlines opened its Frankfurt schedule with flight VL946 to Manchester. The airline flew the service in the late afternoon using an Airbus A320neo with the registration D-AIJN.
The airline plans to grow its Frankfurt route map in stages, adding Berlin and Valencia in February. Lufthansa City Airlines will then add Düsseldorf and Málaga in March, and it will do that with a second aircraft based in Frankfurt.
Summer 2026 will bring a wider rollout from Frankfurt. Lufthansa City Airlines plans to add more destinations over time, including London Heathrow, Stockholm, Bilbao, Hamburg, Helsinki, Ibiza, Marseille, and Bucharest. The airline aims to build a stronger short-haul schedule out of the group’s largest hub as it adds aircraft and crew.

Fleet and hiring plans
Lufthansa City Airlines plans to expand its Frankfurt fleet to seven Airbus A320neo aircraft by fall. The airline already operates 13 aircraft from Munich, which remains its home hub. They also shared a snapshot of its 2025 flying. The airline flew nearly 16,000 flights, carried around 2 million passengers, and served 27 destinations during the year.
Lufthansa City Airlines also continues to hire for its growth plans. The airline has already hired around 60 employees in Frankfurt. Lufthansa City Airlines expects to hire 80 more cockpit crew and 200 more cabin crew in the coming months. The airline now employs around 450 people in total.
They also kept a wider network option in place for travelers. The airline has held permanent membership in the Star Alliance since September 2025, which links it to more partner airlines and shared benefits across the alliance.
