Lufthansa Group Embarks on Fleet Expansion with 200 New Jets

The Lufthansa Group has made a groundbreaking announcement on December 19, 2023, revealing its decision to significantly expand its fleet. The group has placed orders with both Boeing and Airbus for a total of up to 200 aircraft, marking a pivotal moment in its journey towards modernization and sustainability.

Lufthansa’s orders include 40 Boeing 737 MAX 8s, with the option to acquire 60 more in the future. Additionally, the group has ordered 40 Airbus A220-300s for Lufthansa City Airlines, with the possibility of adding 20 more. The agreement with Airbus also encompasses an option for 40 aircraft from the Airbus A320 family. This massive order reflects Lufthansa’s strategic vision and commitment to enhancing its service offerings and efficiency.

Christian Scherer, Chief Commercial Officer and Head of Airbus International, expressed his delight at this substantial commitment from a long-standing partner. “As the only clean sheet design aircraft and specifically designed for the 100-150 seat market, the A220 is the most efficient solution in its category to support Lufthansa Group meeting its exciting airline development and sustainability objectives,” Scherer noted.

Financials and Delivery Timeline

The firm deals are cumulatively valued at $9 billion, with the delivery of these aircraft scheduled from 2026 to 2032. This significant investment is a clear indication of Lufthansa’s dedication to modernizing its fleet and improving its global aviation services.

Detlef Kayser, a Member of Lufthansa’s Executive Board, highlighted the comprehensive benefits of the deal. “We are pleased that both Airbus and Boeing were able to convince us on all commercial and technological aspects,” Kayser said. He also emphasized the flexibility the Boeing 737-8 MAX will provide for future procurement of short- and medium-haul aircraft, along with the additional comfort these ultra-modern aircraft offer to guests.

Enhancing the Fleet Size

The addition of the 40 Boeing 737 MAX 8s and 40 Airbus A220-300s will increase Lufthansa Group’s firm orders from around 200 to 280 aircraft. This expansion is a strategic move to strengthen the group’s position in the aviation industry.

Stan Deal, President and CEO of Boeing Commercial Airplanes, commented on the longstanding relationship with the Lufthansa Group and the significance of the 737’s return to the fleet. “The 737-8 will help the Lufthansa Group meet those sustainability targets with significant improvements in fuel use, emissions, and community noise impacts, all while reducing costs for the airline,” Deal stated.

Lufthansa Group’s current Boeing order backlog includes 34 787 Dreamliners, seven 777-8 Freighters, and 20 777-9 planes, underscoring the group’s commitment to a diverse and advanced fleet.
