The Lufthansa Group has set its sights on a significant expansion of its fleet, eyeing a total of 80 new aircraft from industry giants Boeing, Airbus, and Embraer. This move is part of a strategic plan to enhance their operations and cater to a growing customer base.
Short-Haul Fleet Reinforcement
In an internal employee briefing in October 2023, Carsten Spohr, the Group’s Chief Executive Officer (CEO), shared the company’s intentions to bolster its short-haul fleet. The focus is on acquiring 40 new aircraft, specifically eyeing the Airbus A220 and the Embraer E2 series. These planes are slated for the launch of Lufthansa’s new carrier, City Airlines, which is expected to take to the skies in 2024.
Spohr also mentioned that the Group is considering another set of 40 medium-haul jets. The options on the table include the Airbus A320neo and the Boeing 737 MAX. However, the allocation of these medium-haul jets within the Lufthansa Group’s various airlines remains undecided.
Long-Haul Innovations and Enhancements
During a media conference on November 2, 2023, Spohr unveiled plans for the summer of 2024 that are set to elevate the long-haul travel experience. Lufthansa anticipates the debut of its first long-haul flight featuring the new Allegris first-class cabins. Alongside this premium offering, the airline will also introduce revamped seating across economy, premium economy, and business class.
Adding to the list of enhancements, Lufthansa is preparing to open a new lounge in Terminal 6 at John F. Kennedy Airport (JFK). This new space will provide travelers with a place to relax and recharge before their flights with Lufthansa.
The Lufthansa Group is on the brink of a major fleet expansion, with plans to introduce 80 new aircraft into their lineup. This development reflects the Group’s commitment to growth and innovation across all aspects of their service, from short-haul to long-haul flights. With new aircraft, cabin upgrades, and enhanced airport facilities on the horizon, Lufthansa is poised to offer an even more refined travel experience to its passengers.
