Philippine Airlines (PAL) is set to expand its fleet as it expects to finalize its order for more widebody aircraft in the coming months. The airline’s CEO, Stanley Ng, revealed that the carrier plans to “revisit” its order book and is eyeing the larger A350-1000 aircraft. Ng did not indicate how many planes they plan to order, but this isn’t the first time that PAL has expressed an interest in the A350-1000.
PAL first committed to six A350-900s in 2016 and expressed interest in the larger A350-1000 in 2018. Ng made the announcement at a media event celebrating the airline’s 82nd anniversary. PAL also plans to reactivate seven parked jets, bringing its fleet to 75 in-service aircraft. In addition, the airline is scheduled to take delivery of 13 A321neos through 2026.
Ng also mentioned that the airline will double its capital expenditure, investing in system upgrades, and customer relationship management systems.
Ng remains optimistic about the airline’s profitability, with the airline’s financial results for the quarter to 31 March showing positive numbers. The CEO noted that international and domestic travel demand remains robust, and the airline has been profitable for most of 2022, which is its first full year since exiting restructuring in late-December 2021.
Rising from the Pandemic
Philippine Airlines, like many other airlines worldwide, is trying to recover from the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic. The airline had to reduce its fleet and undergo restructuring to survive. Despite the challenges, the airline is continuing to invest in its future and respond to the growing demand for air travel.
Adding the larger A350-1000 to its fleet will allow PAL to expand its international routes and compete more effectively with other airlines in the region. The airline’s decision to reactivate seven parked jets will also help it meet rising demand for domestic travel, particularly as the Philippines continues to recover from the pandemic.
As travel restrictions ease globally, airlines like PAL are gearing up to meet the rising demand for air travel. The new aircraft order is part of the airline’s plan to position itself for growth, and the move is expected to help the airline attract more passengers while boosting profitability.
PAL is preparing to welcome more international tourists to the Philippines and is committed to enhancing its services and expanding its fleet. The addition of new aircraft will provide PAL with the necessary capacity to transport more passengers and remain competitive in the market.
