Akbar Al Baker, the CEO of Qatar Airways since 1997, has decided to step down later in 2023. This news came out through an internal memo that Reuters got a hold of. Al Baker has been the face of the airline for over two decades, transforming it from a regional entity to a global competitor against big names like Emirates and Turkish Airlines.
The Man Behind the Transformation
Al Baker took over the reins of Qatar Airways when it had just five aircraft in 1996. His leadership has been pivotal in the airline’s journey to becoming a global player. “After 27 years of service, I am writing to you to announce that I will step down from the Qatar Airways Group,” Al Baker stated. “In 1996, with a fleet of just five aircraft, unwavering dedication, and a loyal and passionate team, together we embarked on a remarkable journey to aviation excellence.”
In recent times, Al Baker has been in the news for a dispute with Airbus over paint and surface damage, which led to the grounding of 20 A350 airliners. This issue has been a significant point of contention between the airline and the aircraft manufacturer.
The Successor: Badr Mohammed Al Meer
Badr Mohammed Al Meer, the current Chief Operating Officer of Hamad International Airport, is set to replace Al Baker as the new CEO. Al Meer is well-versed in the aviation sector and has been with Hamad International Airport since 2014. He has an educational background in engineering, having graduated from the American University of Beirut and the University of Colorado.
During his tenure at Hamad International Airport, Al Meer has been crucial in turning the airport into a global hub. The airport received the title of ‘World’s Best Airport’ in 2021 and 2022 by Skytrax. It also won the ‘Best Airport in the Middle East’ for nine consecutive years. Al Meer has been proactive in navigating the airport through the pandemic by implementing new technologies for a more efficient and hygienic passenger experience. In 2022, the airport also opened The Orchard, a 60,000-square-foot indoor tropical garden, similar to the one at Singapore Changi Airport.
Qatar Airways is about to experience a significant leadership change. Akbar Al Baker, who has been instrumental in the airline’s global rise, is stepping down. Badr Mohammed Al Meer, known for his successful stint at Hamad International Airport, will take over the role of CEO.
