On April 14, 2023, Qatar Airways took delivery of its first Boeing 737 MAX 8 aircraft from Air Lease Corporation. The aircraft, registered as A7-BSC (msn 43329), was flown from Everett to Doha Hamad International via Reykjavik Keflavik. Although the aircraft has not yet been inducted into revenue service, it operated a test flight around the Qatari hub on April 16. Qatar Airways has not yet filed schedules for the new aircraft type, but it is expected to be integrated into the airline’s fleet soon.
A Change of Plans for the 737 MAX 8s
Interestingly, the aircraft is the first of nine 737 MAX 8s initially intended for S7 Airlines (S7, Novosibirsk) but were later acquired by the Qatari carrier. This acquisition demonstrates Qatar Airways’ commitment to expanding its fleet and enhancing the overall flying experience for its passengers. The addition of the 737 MAX 8 aircraft is expected to provide operational benefits, such as increased fuel efficiency and range, as well as an improved passenger experience due to the aircraft’s modern design and advanced technology.
Qatar Airways’ History with the 737 MAX
This marks the second time that the Qatar Airways Group has taken leased 737 MAX 8 aircraft. The first three deliveries took place in 2019, with an additional two prepared for delivery when the aircraft type was grounded in March of that year. These aircraft were operated by Air Italy, a then 49%-owned subsidiary of the Qatar Airways Group. Following the collapse of Air Italy, the Qatari group returned all 737 MAX aircraft and announced that it would not be operating the type.
A New Chapter for the 737 MAX
However, in a surprising turn of events, the airline placed an order for twenty-five 737 MAX 10s last year, with an option for an additional twenty-five aircraft. This decision highlights Qatar Airways’ confidence in the revamped 737 MAX program, as well as the airline’s commitment to offering its passengers the best possible flying experience with a modern and efficient fleet.
As Qatar Airways welcomes its first 737 MAX 8, it will be interesting to see how the carrier integrates the aircraft into its operations and expands its network. The addition of these aircraft also underscores the airline’s continued focus on sustainability, as the 737 MAX’s fuel-efficient design and advanced technology contribute to reduced emissions and overall environmental impact.
