Thai Airways has finalized an order for 45 Boeing 787 Dreamliners at the Singapore Air Show. This decision is a part of the airline’s strategic plan to modernize its widebody fleet with more efficient aircraft and to tap into new opportunities by expanding its route network across Southeast Asia and beyond.
In line with global environmental goals and the airline’s commitment to achieving carbon neutrality by 2050, Thai Airways has chosen the 787-9 model, known for its fuel efficiency and reduced environmental footprint. These aircraft will be powered by GEnx engines, celebrated for their advanced technology and lower emissions. Thai Airways CEO, Chai Eamsiri, expressed confidence in how this fleet enhancement will not only elevate the customer experience but also contribute positively to Thailand’s economy and environmental objectives.
The acquisition of the 787 Dreamliners is seen as a pivotal step towards providing superior service to passengers while supporting the growth of air travel demand in Southeast Asia. This addition is expected to significantly reduce fuel usage and emissions by up to 25% in comparison to the aircraft being replaced, marking a leap forward in sustainable aviation practices.
Strengthening Regional Connectivity and Economic Growth
Thai Airways has a robust history of connecting nearly 60 destinations worldwide, utilizing its widebody jets, including the 777s and 787s, to serve routes to the Middle East, Asia, and Europe. The inclusion of more 787-9s in their fleet will enhance operational efficiency and allow the airline to carry nearly 20% more passengers on longer routes, further expanding its global footprint.
Brad McMullen, Boeing’s Senior Vice President of Commercial Sales and Marketing, highlighted the order as a testament to the enduring partnership between Boeing and Thai Airways. He emphasized the role of the 787 Dreamliner in enabling Thai Airways to meet the increasing demand for air travel, thereby fostering tourism, boosting trade, and opening new avenues for the airline’s expansion.
This strategic investment was formalized in December 2023, with the order initially listed as unidentified on Boeing’s Orders & Deliveries website. Reflecting on the future of aviation in Southeast Asia, Boeing’s 2023 Commercial Market Outlook projects a significant increase in the region’s widebody fleet, underscoring the growing need for passenger and freighter aircraft, including the 787 Dreamliner family and the 777X.
Boeing’s relationship with Thai Airways and its support for Thailand’s aviation sector extend over six decades, demonstrating a deep-rooted commitment to advancing the country’s aviation industry. Beyond aircraft, Boeing’s presence in Thailand spans various initiatives, from STEM education to sustainable livelihood projects, illustrating a comprehensive approach to corporate responsibility.
