Thai Airways is looking for buyers for its six A380 planes. The airline made this public on August 22, 2023, and it’s all official with the Bangkok Bankruptcy Court’s nod. If you’re interested, you’ve got until 11:59 PM local time on September 12, 2023, to make your bid.
The Nitty-Gritty of the Deal
So, what do you need to know if you’re thinking about buying? First off, each bid needs a refundable $50,000 deposit per plane. Thai Airways will only finalize the sale after getting the green light from their plan administrator. The planes come with four Rolls-Royce Trent 970-84 engines each. Here’s a quick rundown of the planes up for grabs:
- HS-TUA is 11.48 years old with 32,880 flight hours over 4,291 cycles.
- HS-TUB is 11.23 years old with 32,699 flight hours over 4,172 cycles.
- HS-TUC is 11.04 years old with 32,550 flight hours over 4,059 cycles.
- HS-TUD is 10.87 years old with 31,188 flight hours over 3,838 cycles.
- HS-TUE is 10.19 years old with 30,645 flight hours over 3,691 cycles.
- HS-TUF is 10.34 years old with 29,639 flight hours over 3,589 cycles.
These planes are sold as-is and are currently parked at Bangkok Suvarnabhumi Airport and Utapao.
Who Can and Can’t Bid
If you’re on Thai’s blacklist or under any UN or US government sanctions, sorry, you can’t bid. Your bid should include a bunch of documents like company info, board approvals, and proof of funds. Once Thai Airways accepts your proposal, you’ll need to pay a 20% deposit within five days. The rest of the payment is due on or before the plane’s delivery date. Oh, and you’ll have to move the plane out of Thailand within 30 days of getting it.
Inspecting the planes before buying is possible, but it might cost you $5,000 per plane for “aircraft inspection preparation cost.” Thai Airways can also reject any bid without giving a reason. If your bid wins, you’ll have to sign a purchase agreement within ten working days.
Past Sales and Future Plans
Thai Airways isn’t new to selling planes. They’ve already sold their entire range of B737-400, B747-400, B777-200, B777-300, A300-600, and A340 family-type aircraft. Now, they’re only looking to sell these A380s.
