There is a reason why the Boeing 777X has folding wingtips, and yes, it’s similar to those of carrier-based planes. The Boeing 777X folding wingtips enables the aircraft to fit into the same airport gates and taxiways used by the current models of the Boeing 777, like the 777-300ER.
