United Airlines Installs Bigger Overhead Bins on E175 Fleet

Air travel just got a little less stressful for passengers on United Airlines’ regional flights after the airline announced a major upgrade to their Embraer E175 fleet. They installed brand new overhead bins with significantly more space for carry-on luggage.

  • Passengers flying on United Express-operated E175 airplanes can expect to see the new bins rolled out by the end of 2024, with 50 aircraft receiving the upgrade initially.
  • This is just the first phase, with United aiming to expand the program to over 150 E175s by the end of 2026.
  • The new bins offer a whopping 80% increase in storage space, accommodating up to 29 additional carry-on bags compared to the previous design.

United Takes the Lead

United is the first airline to implement these larger bins on E175 aircraft. This innovative move is expected to significantly reduce the need for gate-checking carry-on luggage, a major pain point for many travelers. United estimates that this change will eliminate the need for gate-checking on over 150,000 E175 flights annually, benefiting roughly one million passengers.

United Airlines

The focus on larger overhead bins is part of United’s ongoing commitment to improve the passenger experience. This upgrade aims to streamline the boarding process, reduce frustration at the gate, and ultimately lead to a more enjoyable travel experience for everyone.

The new bins will also feature braille and tactile placards, further enhancing accessibility for passengers with visual impairments. This aligns with United’s broader accessibility initiatives announced in 2023.

By increasing carry-on space and prioritizing accessibility, United Airlines is making regional travel more convenient and less stressful for passengers. This upgrade, combined with United’s existing fleet of mainline aircraft with ample overhead storage, creates a seamless travel experience for all customers, whether flying domestically or internationally.
