United Airlines Under Tighter FAA Scrutiny After Safety Incidents

United Airlines saw a 3.4% drop in shares this Monday, following the Federal Aviation Administration’s (FAA) announcement that it’s stepping up oversight of the airline due to recent safety concerns. This increased scrutiny comes after a series of incidents that have raised questions about the airline’s compliance with safety regulations.

Over the weekend, the FAA revealed plans to conduct a formal evaluation of United Airlines. This process aims to verify the Chicago-based airline’s adherence to safety standards and might affect the timing of future United certification projects, depending on the findings. Although specific details about the potential impact on United’s new planes or routes remain undisclosed, the FAA’s move signals a serious response to safety lapses.

The Air Line Pilots Association (ALPA), representing United pilots, acknowledged the evaluation as a routine audit that occurs every few years, with the last one conducted in 2018. ALPA views this as a chance for United to enhance operational safety and make necessary adjustments for future success. However, it remains uncertain whether the FAA will halt any of United’s certification activities, with Boeing delivery delays and economic factors also playing a role.

Recent Safety Incidents Prompting FAA Action

The FAA’s decision follows a string of safety incidents involving United Airlines. Notably, on March 15, a United flight landed in Oregon missing an external panel, triggering an FAA probe. Additionally, incidents including a Boeing 737 MAX veering off the runway in Houston and a Boeing 777-200 losing a tire after takeoff have further underscored the need for stringent oversight.

In response, United has informed its employees to expect an increased FAA presence in the coming weeks as the agency reviews the airline’s operational processes, manuals, and facilities. This increased oversight comes at a time when United has already anticipated delays in Boeing deliveries, adding another layer of complexity to its operational challenges.
