United Boeing 777 Makes Emergency Landing in Denver

On March 29, a routine journey from San Francisco to Paris took an unexpected detour for passengers aboard United Airlines Flight UA990 made an emergency landing. The United Boeing 777, identified as N224UA, was forced to make an emergency landing in Denver due to an engine issue.

United Airlines Flight UA990, a scheduled service connecting San Francisco with Paris CDG, encountered an engine problem shortly after takeoff. The aircraft, a 22.4-year-old Boeing 777-200ER delivered to United in December 2001, was part of the airline’s fleet of 74 777-200s, with 70 currently in active service. This particular model, with an average fleet age of 24.9 years, is a workhorse for the airline, known for its reliability and comfort.

The flight departed San Francisco at 6:36 PM local time on March 28, initially heading north over the Icelandic tracks towards Paris. However, as it neared the Canadian border, the aircraft executed a sharp U-turn, diverting south towards Denver. After nearly three and a half hours in the air, the plane landed safely in Denver without further incident. Reports from media outlets in the United States highlighted the engine issue as the cause of the diversion, underscoring the crew’s prompt response to ensure the safety of everyone onboard.

Investigation and Aftermath

Following the incident, N224UA was grounded for inspection, and the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) initiated an investigation. This event is part of a series of challenges facing United Airlines and the broader aviation sector in the United States, including recent incidents such as a tire detachment on a flight from San Francisco to Japan and an aircraft sliding off the apron in Texas.
