Royal Thai Air Force Selects JAS39 Gripen E/F over F-16V

The Royal Thai Air Force has decided to acquire Saab JAS39 Gripen E/F fighter jets from Sweden, choosing them over the US-made F-16s. This decision follows an extensive review by an air force selection committee that considered additional details submitted by both contenders on August 20, 2024. Air Chief Marshal Phanphakdee Phattanakul, the air force commander, announced the decision on Tuesday, highlighting the key factors that led to the selection of the Gripen E/F over the Lockheed F-16V Block 70/72.

The selection process placed a strong emphasis on offsets, such as technology transfer and training, which have become increasingly important in the Thai military’s procurement strategy. After evaluating these factors, the committee concluded that the Gripen jets offered the best overall package for the Royal Thai Air Force.

ACM Phanphakdee stated that the air force would now prepare detailed documents to explain the decision, outlining the information provided by both Saab, the Swedish manufacturer, and Lockheed Martin, the US competitor. These documents will be shared with the public and higher authorities to ensure transparency.

Modernizing Thailand’s Air Fleet

The Royal Thai Air Force has been seeking to purchase four new fighter jets as part of its plan to replace a dozen aging F-16s that are nearing decommissioning. Sources had previously indicated a preference for the Gripen, and this decision confirms that inclination. The procurement process will now move forward, pending final approval by the new defense minister and the cabinet, expected to be formed soon after the recent election of Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra.

ACM Phanphakdee expressed confidence in the air force’s choice, noting that the new Gripen jets would play a crucial role in enhancing the air force’s capabilities. He emphasized that these aircraft would provide maximum benefits for national security and the protection of Thailand’s sovereignty.

Regional Implications

The decision by the Royal Thai Air Force is significant, as other regional air forces, such as the Philippine Air Force, are currently evaluating the same fighter jets. The Philippines is considering both the JAS39 E/F Gripen and the Lockheed F-16V Viper Block 70/72 for its own fleet modernization efforts.
