The Philippines is taking a major step toward decarbonizing its aviation sector through a new partnership with Airbus, the Department of Transport, Department of Energy, and the Civil Aviation Authority of the Philippines. Together, the Philippines and Airbus have launched a study to explore the development of the Philippines’ Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) ecosystem.
This initiative follows the formation of a SAF committee under the National Biofuels Board, led by the Philippine Department of Energy. The committee will oversee the creation of a SAF roadmap for the country, with one of the first priorities being a feasibility study on SAF, aligned with guidelines set by the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO).
As a member of ICAO, the Philippines is committed to achieving net zero carbon emissions by 2050. To reach this target, the country plans to implement a mix of strategies, including fleet renewal, new technologies, operational improvements, the use of SAF, and carbon offset programs. The SAF feasibility study will play a critical role in supporting these efforts.
The study, supported by Airbus as part of its partnership with ICAO’s ACT-SAF program, will analyze the macroeconomic factors that impact SAF development in the Philippines. It will also evaluate SAF feedstocks, production methods, financing, policies, and the required support to make SAF production viable. This will result in a comprehensive action plan aimed at encouraging local stakeholders to support SAF production.
Airbus and the Future of SAF
SAF is seen as a key factor in reducing the aviation industry’s carbon emissions. According to Airbus, SAF can reduce carbon emissions by up to 80% throughout its lifecycle, compared to traditional fossil fuels. Airbus aircraft are already certified to operate with up to 50% SAF, with a goal for all planes to use up to 100% SAF by 2030.
