Ten Ways to Make a Flight Attendant Happy

When you board the plane, you are greeted by your flight attendants. And for sure, some, or okay, many of you do find them attractive. Hence, you might be thinking of ways to impress or make them happy. Well, honestly, you don’t need those cheesy lines. With more than a hundred passengers they encounter every day, flight attendants have heard the cheekiest and cheesiest pick-up lines of all. That simply doesn’t really make them happy, nor does it impress them. However, here are 10 ways to make a flight attendant happy without using those pick-up lines that ChatGPT has given you the night before.

Greet them back with a smile.

Flight attendants are very used to being ignored when they greet passengers. It is definitely no big issue to them if you don’t greet them back, and they usually just shrug it off. However, greeting them back does make them happy. And honestly, it doesn’t take much time or energy to greet your flight attendants back. At the end of the day, no one really likes being ignored, no matter how used to it we are.

Do not stack your plates and glasses when returning them to the cabin crew.

While I do understand that you just want to be helpful, stacking them up usually makes it harder for cabin crew members. As such, just arrange them well on the tray without having to stack them. That will make flight attendants happy.

Hand them a little present when you board or after your flight as a sign of appreciation.

Flying can really get tiring for flight attendants, and a simple gesture of gratitude, like a pastry, means a lot to them. It makes them feel appreciated for their efforts and dedication in ensuring your safety on board throughout your flight.

Hand them a commendation for their exemplary service.

You may do this via the airline’s feedback form, or you may write it down on a piece of paper and hand it over to the flight purser. Just for your information, a passenger commendation for the cabin crew goes a long way. It can sometimes even be a strong basis for regularization if the flight attendant is still on probation, or it can be added merits for them. Usually, I give out commendations for my flight attendants, especially if I see them doing their best. Passenger commendations are big for flight attendants.

Share a little story with your flight attendants when they are not so busy, especially during the cruise.

It’s nice to make friends with them, and flight attendants are used to this. They usually hear and share stories with fellow passengers, especially when there’s not much happening on board. Honestly, flight attendants like this. It keeps them entertained, and they feel that you don’t just see them as your crew but also as a friend or new acquaintance. Just make sure they are not busy. Flight attendants appreciate meaningful conversations with their passengers.

Do not get mad at your flight attendants during delayed flights.

First of all, it’s something beyond the control of your cabin crew. Secondly, flight attendants do not like delays. They actually hate them. First, their duty hours are extended, and some may have more sectors to fly to after. While I do know that delays are frustrating, it really makes flight attendants happy that you still remain nice to them despite delays.

Pay attention to their safety demo and briefing.

Safety demos are common, and this is mandatory (if not a demo, a video). However, flight attendants appreciate it when you pay attention to the safety demo. It gives them the feeling that you take safety seriously, and they will get the impression that during an emergency, you will be able to make things easier for them, especially during those critical moments of an emergency evacuation.

Return whatever you borrowed from them, especially ballpens.

These items are small, and flight attendants have loads of pens. However, returning them shows how you value their property, no matter how big or small.

Smile back at your flight attendants.

You see, we all go through many things in life. For flight attendants, despite some challenges in life that they may be facing, deep behind their signature smiles, they may be going through some problems or crises. Smiling back cushions the blow, and it makes them very happy. Well, as they say, a smile is contagious.

Last but not least, cooperate and obey your flight attendants.

Follow their safety instructions. Present your boarding pass when requested. Listen to the emergency door safety briefing if you are seated in an exit row. When you are asked to put up your window shades, put your seats in an upright position, and follow other safety procedures, just obey your cabin crew. Honestly, this will make flight attendants happy. It means you will not be a difficult passenger for them.
