Virgin Atlantic now allows their uniformed cabin crew to display tattoos

Sana all! There are quite a several cabin crew members with tattoos, which, is normal and there is nothing wrong with that. However, the majority of airlines are strict about that. While most airlines require tattoos to be covered under their uniforms, some do not allow tattoos at all. However, it is a different story for one airline. UK’s Virgin Atlantic now allows their cabin crew to display their tattoos at work and in uniform!

In a move to further “champion individuality”, this decision came after a month the airline also allowed male cabin crew to wear non-discreet make-up!

The point of Virgin Atlantic is to allow their cabin crew to be themselves with that feeling of assurance that they belong under one family. The airline is very aware that there are individuals who love to express their unique identities, and these individuals should not be excluded.

There still are restrictions

Virgin Atlantic allows tattoos to only be displayed on the arms, wrists, and legs. However, neck and face tattoos are still not yet allowed.

Tattoos that contain profanity, nudity, or violence, or are otherwise deemed offensive are not allowed. Gang and prison-style tattoos also remain banned.

Other airlines that allow uniformed cabin crew to have visible tattoos

Virgin Atlantic though is not the world’s first airline to allow its cabin crew to have visible tattoos. In 2019, Air New Zealand became the world’s first major airline to allow its cabin crew to have visible tattoos. This change came in primarily to not exclude workers who had  Tā Moko – a traditional form of Māori tattooing.

While all airlines in the Philippines do not allow cabin crew to have visible tattoos, there are a few airlines with more relaxed rules when it comes to self-expression. AirAsia Philippines gives their cabin crew more freedom for their make-up and hair-do for as long as they complement the red uniform and branding. Of course, there are still a few parameters to be followed.

AirAsia’s flight attendants are even allowed to color their hair but then again, it has to complement the uniform.

Will other airlines in the country relax their rules when it comes to self-expression at work? Beats me!
