Why some flight attendants turn safety demos into comedy shows

We all have the impression that the cabin crew safety demonstration is serious, but I’m sure some of you have seen those ‘comic’ safety demonstrations performed by various flight attendants. Is this correct? Why make fun of a serious safety demonstration? Many of you are probably wondering why some flight attendants turn their safety demonstrations into comedy shows. You’ll be surprised why, and the reason is safety!

Passengers rarely pay attention to the safety demonstration, especially if it is not their first flight. This can be extremely dangerous during an emergency because people may forget what to do if one occurs. Many airlines’ main challenge is getting passengers to pay attention to safety demonstrations.

And for some airlines, such as Southwest Airlines in the United States, there is no better way to inject some levity into their safety demonstration.

People need to pay attention to the safety demo

Even after numerous flights, passengers frequently forget how to put on oxygen masks or open an emergency exit in an emergency. During an emergency, evacuation must be quick and completed in less than 90 seconds. This is why, no matter how redundant and repetitive the safety demonstration may be, it is always important to pay attention to it.

Other gimmicks have been used by airlines to get passengers’ attention during safety demonstrations. Legacy airlines, such as Philippine Airlines, use videos to demonstrate the aircraft’s safety features. These videos, as in the case of PAL, are made in a unique way to capture the attention of the passengers. PAL’s safety video depicts the various islands in the Philippines.

Some low-cost airlines, such as West Jet in Canada and Southwest, use comedy to attract passengers’ attention. This keeps passengers’ attention on the safety demonstrations, which is also good for their own safety in case of an emergency. Airlines really permit this, hence, done one purpose.

But wait, are these flight attendants also being trained to be stand-up comedians? This is why airlines inquire about your skills during the hiring process. So the airlines understand how to put your skills to good use.

So now you understand why flight attendants inject humor into the safety demonstration. This is not primarily for entertainment purposes, but rather for safety.

In the aviation industry, safety is paramount and the airlines will do all to make sure that passengers get to fly from point A to point B safely and in one piece.
