In an unfortunate turn of events for travelers, American Airlines has announced that it will temporarily suspend its services between Philadelphia International and Madrid Barajas during May and early June 2023. The suspension comes as a result of delayed deliveries of the Boeing 787 aircraft, which have affected the airline’s ability to maintain this daily route.
American Airlines’ daily route between Philadelphia and Madrid is currently the only scheduled service connecting these two cities, as highlighted by the ch-aviation schedules module. This suspension will undoubtedly cause some inconvenience for passengers looking to fly between these destinations during the affected period.
Current and Future B787 Fleet for American Airlines
American Airlines operates a fleet of thirty-four B787-8s and twenty-two B787-9s, with additional orders for three more B787-8s and 30 B787-9s from Boeing and Boeing Capital, according to the ch-aviation fleets advanced module. The airline received one of the -8s this month, with another three B787s due later in 2023 and a further 12 in 2024.
The ch-aviation capacities module reveals that American Airlines primarily deploys its B787 aircraft on transatlantic and South American routes. In addition, the airline operates a few services to the Asia-Pacific region, with flights originating from its hubs at Chicago O’Hare, Philadelphia, Miami International, and Dallas/Fort Worth.
Interestingly, American Airlines is one of only two US-based operators of the B787 Family aircraft. The other operator, United Airlines, currently has twelve -8s and thirty-eight -9s in its fleet, with a further 100 -9s on firm order.
Coping with Temporary Suspension and Future Outlook
The temporary suspension of the Philadelphia-Madrid route may cause disruptions for travelers during May and early June 2023. However, it’s essential to remember that this suspension is due to circumstances beyond the airline’s control – the delivery delays of the B787 aircraft.
As American Airlines is set to receive additional B787s in the coming years, the airline will likely be able to expand its route network and offer more options for passengers. In the meantime, travelers affected by the suspension can explore alternative routes or wait for the service to resume once the airline has received the necessary aircraft deliveries. With the continued growth and development of American Airlines’ B787 fleet, passengers can look forward to more reliable services and exciting travel opportunities in the future.
