Do You Need Backers to Become a Flight Attendant?

Do You Need Backers to Become a Flight Attendant?

Some individuals approach me with a question, influenced by the ever-gossipy ‘Maritess’ next door: “Is it true that you need backers to become a flight attendant?” Indeed, you do need backers to become a flight attendant. However, these backers are not individuals but rather inherent qualities such as confidence, charm, excellent communication skills, meticulous grooming, the right attitude, and a heartfelt desire to be of service to others. These are the traits that support you on your journey to becoming a flight attendant. And, contrary to what ‘Maritess’ might have you believe, you don’t need her or anyone else like her as your backer. Such individuals may only cloud your aspirations with unrealistic expectations.

Why then, are these qualities your true backers and not someone else? Allow me to explain.

Confidence

Confidence is more than just a word when it comes to aspiring flight attendants; it’s a cornerstone of the profession. The primary role of a flight attendant involves dealing with a diverse range of people under various conditions, some of which can be unpredictable and demanding. Confidence is a vital trait as it imparts a sense of security to passengers. It assures them that they are in safe hands, making the entire flight experience more comfortable and enjoyable. Confidence enables flight attendants to handle all situations with poise and grace, from managing daily passenger interactions to dealing with rare emergency situations.

Charm

Equally important as confidence is the innate charm a flight attendant possesses. This charm is what helps create a warm and welcoming environment in the cabin, setting the tone for the passengers’ flight experience. A flight attendant’s charm comes from genuine smiles, a friendly demeanor, and an overall positive aura that exudes warmth and approachability. The ability to make passengers feel seen, heard, and valued cannot be underestimated, as it directly impacts the overall satisfaction of their journey.

Communication Skills

Communication skills are essential in a profession where information needs to be relayed clearly and effectively. Whether it’s demonstrating safety procedures, explaining meal options, or calming a nervous flyer, good communication skills can make a significant difference in the passenger’s experience. Flight attendants also need to communicate effectively with their colleagues, ensuring that the whole team works in unison for the smooth operation of the flight.

Good Grooming

Good grooming goes hand in hand with the image of a flight attendant. Maintaining a professional appearance is not only an airline standard but also a reflection of respect towards the passengers and the job. Clean, neat, and formal attire, along with good personal hygiene, are fundamental elements that enhance the flight attendant’s image, representing the airline’s commitment to quality and excellence.

The Right Attitude

Having the right attitude can make all the difference in handling the dynamic and demanding environment on a plane. Patience, positivity, adaptability, and a problem-solving mindset are traits that define successful flight attendants. They remain calm and composed, and they handle all situations, whether routine or emergency, with a can-do attitude. The right attitude is the invisible thread that weaves through every aspect of a flight attendant’s responsibilities, ensuring passengers’ comfort and safety.

The Desire to Serve Others

Above all, a genuine desire to serve others is what truly sets flight attendants apart. This innate desire is the fuel that powers their ability to excel in their role despite the long hours and the demands of the job. It is this spirit of service that makes every passenger feel cared for, making their flight experience memorable.

Let’s Get Real

Perhaps you’re now thinking, “let’s face reality, don’t you need to know someone on the inside?” I’ve been witness to recruitment events, seeing sons, daughters, or those with personal connections to airline executives being rejected due to performing poorly during the recruitment process. Presumably, their overconfidence led them to believe their connections would be enough to secure the position. However, having an internal connection, or even being related to an airline decision maker, doesn’t guarantee your acceptance as a cabin crew member. You must demonstrate your worthiness by meeting the airline’s standards and requirements.
