AirAsia Philippines recognizes the country’s potential for growth in nature and experiential tourism. The recent pandemic provided an opportunity for destinations to rest, recover, and flourish. However, the responsibility for environmental protection and sustainability lies with all stakeholders, including airlines, which contribute over 2% of global CO2 emissions. AirAsia Philippines acknowledges the need to reduce carbon emissions and fast-track the use of sustainable aviation fuel (SAF).
During the 2024 Philippine Tourism and Hotel Investment Summit, AirAsia Philippines CEO Ricky Isla emphasized the early stages of technological infrastructure development, policies, regulations, investment opportunities, and technical capabilities for SAF in the Philippines. Despite these challenges, AirAsia remains committed to its Net Zero program. The program aims to use SAF across the entire group, including the Philippines, starting with 2% or 40.62 tonnes in 2025 and reaching 70% or 1.90 million tonnes by 2050.
Mr. Isla highlighted the airline’s ongoing efforts to raise the sustainability bar. These include pursuing regulatory approvals for CORSIA offset management, expanding their aviation sustainability campaign regionally, and incorporating renewable energy at ADE’s maintenance facilities. AirAsia Foundation plans to expand partnerships for sustainable travel, further emphasizing their commitment to sustainability.
Proactive Measures for Sustainability
AirAsia Philippines has implemented several measures to ensure proactive sustainability actions. These include fleet management through the use of more efficient aircraft like the A321neo and optimization of aircraft operations through Green Flight Operations. Additionally, AirAsia promotes small steps toward sustainability on all flights, encouraging guests to bring reusable flasks, coffee cups, and utensils onboard.
Mr. Isla also noted the importance of collaboration between airline operators and other stakeholders in creating awareness among travelers. This collaborative approach is key to promoting sustainable travel practices and ensuring the airline’s sustainability goals are met.
AirAsia Philippines welcomes the Civil Aeronautics Board’s (CAB) decision to lower the Fuel Surcharge from Level 6 to Level 5 for July. Over the past five months, the surcharge remained at a high of Level 6. The reduction to Level 5 means guests can anticipate lower fees ranging from PHP 151.00 to PHP 542.00 for domestic flights and between PHP 498.03 to PHP 3,703.11 for international flights, depending on the destination.
As the World’s Best Low-Cost Airline for 14 consecutive years, AirAsia Philippines remains committed to cushioning the impact of the Fuel Surcharge by offering guests the lowest fares. Initiatives such as the monthly Double Digit Sale and Flash Sale, available via the AirAsia MOVE App and airasia.com, aim to entice more guests to fulfill their travel goals toward the end of 2024.
AirAsia Philippines continues to lead in sustainable aviation, focusing on reducing carbon emissions and promoting sustainable travel practices. Investing in SAF, implementing proactive sustainability measures, and collaborating with stakeholders, AirAsia Philippines aims to contribute to the growth of the country’s tourism sector while ensuring environmental responsibility.
