AirAsia Philippines Sounds Alarm on Online Scams

AirAsia Philippines is putting out a warning to its customers to be on high alert, especially when hunting for affordable flights online, due to scams. The airline has been alerted to multiple reports of Facebook groups and individuals falsely claiming to represent the brand. These impostors are offering cheap flights, tour packages, and other tourism-related products, and some are even involved in suspicious online activities like job offerings that lead to phishing and other online scams.

Official Ways to Book with AirAsia

Known as the World’s Best Low-Cost Airline, AirAsia wants to make it clear to the public that the legitimate purchase of tickets, promos, and other products can only be done through the airasia Superapp, its website, and AirAsia’s more than 850 travel agency partners throughout the country.

First Officer Steve Dailisan, AirAsia Philippines Communications and Public Affairs Country Head, emphasizes the importance of this issue: “As the pioneer in low-cost air travel and an integrated digital travel and leisure platform, we want to educate and safeguard our guests from scams and other forms of online fraud, especially since most transactions are at their fingertips.”

Cyber Crime in the Philippines: A Growing Concern

A study conducted in Q4 2022 by Statista revealed that 51% of 1,005 Filipinos surveyed claimed to have been victims of phishing. This form of fraud collects personal information, credit card numbers, and passwords. Additionally, 33% were victims of third-party seller scams on legitimate online retail websites. The Philippine National Police Anti-Cybercrime Group has also noted a rise in cybercrime cases, with 4,104 cases reported from January to June 2023.

Dailisan further advises, “We would like to remind our guests that personal information may be collected through airasia.com or airasia Superapp only. The moment a group or an individual allegedly representing our brand solicits your personal information or asks for money, drop the transaction immediately and report them to proper authorities.”
