AirAsia X (AAX) has announced a new route to Nairobi, Kenya, marking a significant milestone as the first low-cost carrier in Malaysia to offer direct flights to the Kenyan capital. This new service is set to commence on November 15, 2024.
This new route is a historic achievement for AirAsia X, reflecting the airline’s strong start to the year with robust financial results and solid load factors. Earlier this year, AirAsia X also introduced flights to Almaty, Kazakhstan, its first entry into Central Asia.
The Nairobi route will connect Kuala Lumpur directly to Kenya, fostering stronger trade, tourism, and business ties between Asia and Africa. This move aims to enhance accessibility and spur economic opportunities for both countries.
AirAsia X will offer a seamless Fly-Thru connection, linking Kenya to 130 destinations across Southeast Asia, Northern and Central Asia, and Australia. This will provide affordable and convenient travel options, reinforcing AirAsia X’s commitment to global connectivity.
YB Dato’ Sri Tiong King Sing, Minister of Tourism, Arts and Culture, commented, “AirAsia X’s first foray into Nairobi is indeed a proud and celebratory occasion for us Malaysians. For more than two decades, the airline has effectively bridged the gap between Asia, Australia, and beyond to Malaysia. Now, we can look forward to welcoming more travelers from Kenya to explore our beautiful destinations in Malaysia.”
Strengthening Ties and Boosting Tourism
Tony Fernandes, CEO of Capital A, expressed his excitement about the new route, stating, “We are thrilled to announce a direct new route, bridging Malaysia and Kenya. This milestone embodies our mission to connect the world affordably. This new route not only opens up Asia to Africa but also has the potential to strengthen ties in tourism, business, and trade between the two continents.”
Benyamin Ismail, CEO of AirAsia X, added, “Embarking on this new adventure into Africa is truly exhilarating, particularly in light of our growth earlier this year. We anticipate carrying over 156,000 travelers annually on this route, strengthening ties and boosting the tourism sectors in both Malaysia and Kenya.”
