AirAsia X preparing to fly to 18 destinations from Kuala Lumpur

AirAsia X, the Malaysian low-cost carrier, has undergone significant changes during the COVID-19 pandemic. However, it is preparing to launch a slew of flights from Kuala Lumpur to 18 destinations in the upcoming northern summer season. The carrier currently has 14 A330-300s, five of which are parked as of the end of February.

According to the summer schedule from March 26th to October 28th, AirAsia X will operate to 18 destinations from Kuala Lumpur. Australia is the most served country with four destinations and up to four daily flights. Meanwhile, China remains the worst affected nation in AirAsia’s network, followed by India, Taiwan, and South Korea.

While AirAsia X has dropped several destinations such as Amritsar, Avalon, Beijing Capital, Changsha, Chengdu, Chongqing, Fukuoka, Jaipur, Jeju, Langzhou, Sapporo, Tianjin, and Xian, it will continue to serve cities like Seoul Incheon, Auckland, Denpasar Bali, Melbourne, Taipei, Tokyo Haneda, Sydney, Perth, Kota Kinabalu, Delhi, Honolulu, Osaka Kansai, Jeddah, Shanghai Pudong, Gold Coast, Hangzhou, and Pusan.

The carrier deployed 377-seat A330-300s on the 184-mile route from Kuala Lumpur to Singapore with a double daily service from November 2019 to April 2020, but it has since ceased operating the route. AirAsia X has also stopped flying to Kuching, Tokyo Haneda, Okinawa, and Singapore since 2019.

It is unclear whether AirAsia X will relaunch the dropped destinations with its existing A330-300s or incoming A321XLRs or A330neos. The carrier is currently undergoing restructuring and is likely to face intense competition from other airlines. Nevertheless, the expansion of its summer schedule demonstrates the airline’s determination to bounce back from the pandemic and provide affordable air travel to its customers.
