Answering the question “why do you want to become a cabin crew”

Honestly, there is no right and wrong answer when airline recruiters will ask you “why do you want to become a cabin crew?” Sometimes or even most of the time, it depends on the person who asked you that question. However, your answer will indeed tell a story about you and your intention of joining the airline.

So regardless if you say “it is my childhood dream”, “I want to travel the world”, “I love traveling”, “I find so much fulfillment in serving others”, and so on, these are neither correct nor wrong answers. Sometimes though, what you say can spell a difference when you apply at an airline to becoming a cabin crew.

Think that all recruiters are after what you say

Perhaps, the best way to answer this question of why you want to become a cabin crew is to be genuine in your answer. However, you might also want to include in your answer that you have a genuine concern for others and you feel that being of service to others is a huge fulfillment.

While not all of the recruiters are after what you say and they may just be checking your communication skills, there are still some who are particular with what you say. Hence, think of it that everyone is doing both.

You would not also want to give airline recruiters the impression that you are just after the benefits and that’s it.

First and foremost, you have to be committed to the job of a flight attendant by knowing what they do. The primary duty of flight attendants is to ensure the safety and security of all passengers on board an aircraft. They have to get from point A to point B in one piece, safely and alive. Their secondary duty is to attend to all the needs of passengers on board and to ensure their comfort. So basically, you will be in a service and hospitality industry, similar to our nurses.

Here are basically the duties of a flight attendant:

• Be able to evacuate all passengers within 90 seconds during an emergency such as but not limited to terrain crash landing, water landing, and fire on board. You are the last to leave a burning aircraft making sure that no other passengers are left.
• Be able to save drowning passengers in the event of a water landing and be able to pull them into a life raft. You will have to know how to float and survive in the middle of the sea.
• Be able to implement airline safety instructions and rules for all passengers.
• Be able to apply CPR or first aid to any passenger in case they suffer or undergo an emergency while the aircraft is still in the air.
• Ensuring that the cabin is always clean and in proper order. If you have to clean soiled toilets, then you will have to do that.
• Deal with a hundred different types of personalities every day like nice to irate passengers.
• Serve your passengers with genuine concern.

So what is your “why” now?

If giving yourself in the name of service is your cup of tea, then maybe taking the job of a flight attendant is for you.

Now, if you are aware of what a flight attendant does and you are ready to take on this very vital role inside the cabin, then it is time to know how to answer “why do you want to be a flight attendant” during your interview.

Your recruiters want to know if you are there for the job, and not for the benefits as previously mentioned. They have to see that you are ready to give yourself to the flying public in the name of service. Recruiters want to see that you want to become a flight attendant because you want to serve and help your passengers.

It will impress them if they hear that you want to be a cabin crew because of the nature of the job.
