Cebu Pacific and MCIA Introduces Bridge-Mounted Equipment Use

Cebu Pacific, in collaboration with Mactan-Cebu International Airport (MCIA), has launched a major initiative aimed at enhancing sustainable operations and improving operational efficiency. This initiative centers around the use of bridge-mounted equipment (BME), a technology designed to reduce environmental impact and operational costs for airlines.

On (August 2), (2024), Cebu Pacific became the first airline to use this new system during a ceremonial plug-in event. An Airbus A321neo, operating flight 5J 5063 from Narita (Tokyo) to Cebu, connected to MCIA’s newly installed BME system. This cutting-edge technology includes a fixed power unit (FPU) and a pre-conditioned air (PCA) unit, which provide ground power and cabin cooling to the aircraft without relying on its jet fuel-powered auxiliary power units (APUs). The implementation of this system is expected to significantly reduce fuel consumption and lower carbon emissions.

Cebu Pacific’s Vice President for Customer Service Operations, Lei Apostol, expressed the airline’s commitment to supporting MCIA’s green initiatives. “Cebu Pacific fully supports Mactan-Cebu International Airport’s ground power initiatives. This represents an important step in creating a sustainable future for Philippine aviation. We are honored to be the first airline to use this technology at MCIA,” said Apostol.

As the pioneer airport in the Philippines to adopt FPU and PCA units, MCIA is leading the way in reducing its ecological footprint and promoting a safer, more efficient working environment. These units are installed under the Passenger Boarding Bridge, ensuring easy access and use during aircraft servicing.

MCIA’s Commitment to Environmental Responsibility

MCIA’s efforts to implement sustainable practices align with global trends in the aviation industry. Airports in major cities like Hong Kong, Zurich, Dublin, and Munich have already adopted similar solutions to minimize their environmental impact. Athanasios Titonis, Chief Executive Officer of Aboitiz InfraCapital GMR Megawide Cebu Airport Corporation, highlighted the significance of this initiative: “International airports like Hong Kong, Zurich, Dublin, and Munich have adopted these innovative solutions to minimize their ecological footprint, and MCIA is thrilled to join these airports and hopeful about its impact in the global sustainability movement.”

The benefits of this initiative extend beyond environmental considerations. The use of BME systems is expected to reduce fuel costs, lower APU maintenance expenses, decrease carbon emissions, and improve air quality for both passengers and airport workers. Additionally, it will help reduce noise levels at the airport, contributing to a more pleasant experience for travelers and staff alike.

As the second busiest airport in the Philippines, MCIA is committed to managing its carbon footprint and promoting sustainable practices within the aviation sector. MCIA Authority General Manager Julius Neri, Jr. emphasized the importance of these efforts, stating, “Being the second busiest airport in the country, we want to make sure to manage our carbon footprint and maintain good air quality for both passengers and workers in the airport. This is why we highly encourage airlines to use FPU and PCA units.”
