CSA Celebrates 100th Year of Challenges and Changes

CSA, the national airline of the Czech Republic, is marking its 100th anniversary this year. Founded on October 6, 1923, CSA has weathered many storms, including political upheavals, financial crises, and even a pandemic. Despite the challenges, the airline has managed to stay in the skies, albeit with a significantly reduced fleet and fewer destinations.

A Storied Past and a Difficult Present

CSA started its journey as the national airline of the newly founded Czechoslovak state. It operated until 1939, when Nazi Germany took over the country. The airline resumed its operations in 1948 under the post-war Communist regime. Fast forward to today, and CSA is facing a different set of challenges. The airline has gone through changes in ownership, filed for bankruptcy, and downsized its operations so much that it nearly went out of business.

In March 2021, CSA found itself in a financial bind, worsened by the Covid pandemic. The airline initiated bankruptcy proceedings, putting its future in serious doubt. However, CSA managed to pull through and emerged from bankruptcy in June 2022. The airline that once had a fleet of over 40 aircraft and dozens of destinations across Europe, North America, and Asia now operates only two Airbus A320 aircraft. These planes serve just three destinations—Paris, Madrid, and Erevan—from Prague-Ruzyně International Airport (PRG).

Signs of Renewal

There’s a glimmer of hope for CSA. In June 2023, the airline announced its first fleet expansion in years. CSA will lease four Airbus A220-300 aircraft from Air Lease Corporation. While this is a far cry from its heyday, it’s a step in the right direction for an airline that has been through so much.

CSA has had a long and tumultuous history, but it’s still here, celebrating its 100th anniversary. The airline has faced numerous challenges, from political changes to financial crises. Despite a significant downsizing, CSA is showing signs of renewal with a small fleet expansion. Only time will tell what the next chapter holds for this centenary airline.
