Full-service airlines such as Emirates are now adopting strategies that were once the domain of low-cost carriers like Cebu Pacific and AirAsia. This indeed reflects the ongoing evolution of in-flight services in the airline industry. Emirates has introduced a meal preordering initiative, which allows passengers to select their hot main meal up to 14 days and at least 24 hours before their flight. This service not only ensures passengers get their preferred meal choice, but it also helps to decrease food wastage.
From July 25, this service will be introduced in Business Class on all flights from Dubai to London Heathrow, London Gatwick, and London Stansted. It offers passengers another level of control over their flight experience. The preordering system will work with existing data and cabin crew reports to help plan menus and manage food stock, contributing to a high-quality dining experience.
Making Selections Ahead of Time
Passengers can view the menu on the Emirates website or app well ahead of their flight. They can choose from a variety of dishes that are inspired by different regions and made with local ingredients. The service also caters to passengers who need special meals.
Once on the flight, cabin crew members can view the meal selections through an application on a device and serve the chosen hot dish. After this initial phase, Emirates aims to expand the meal preorder system to other routes and classes, taking customer feedback into account.
Digital Features for a Smooth Journey
The meal preordering system is part of Emirates’ digital services aimed at enhancing the travel experience. Other services include check-ins via the website or app, digital boarding passes, and itinerary management.
Passengers can also look at digital menus ahead of time and join Emirates Skywards for immediate free connectivity based on their travel class and membership tier. Even before boarding, passengers can create a playlist of movies, TV shows, and music available on ice, the inflight entertainment system, and sync it to their TV screen on the plane. Emirates also offers passengers the opportunity to provide feedback through a digital survey available on the inflight entertainment screen.
